680 Arrests as Extinction Rebellion Protests Grind London to a Halt
Extinction Rebellion’s Final Day in London
Extinction Rebellion’s month-long London protests ended on Thursday, 10 September — their last advertised day of action. Since kicking off on 1 September, the chaos has seen 680 people arrested across the capital.
Mass Arrests for Disruption and Criminal Damage
The arrests span a range of offences including obstructing the highway, criminal damage, and breaching Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 — rules set to limit disorder.
Police Praise Officers Amidst Challenging Protests
Commander Jane Connors, Gold Commander for the operation, said:
“Extinction Rebellion’s latest protests have been a significant challenge, especially amid an ongoing public health crisis. I want to thank officers for their outstanding professionalism over the past two weeks.”
She added:
“We warned demonstrators from the outset that failing to comply with conditions would risk arrest. The public have the right to protest, but not to disrupt London’s communities and businesses.”
More Arrests Could Follow
Connors confirmed the police will continue investigations:
“This has been a large policing operation. We’re still probing those suspected of offences, so expect more arrests.”
