Met Police Hold Minute’s Silence for Slain Sgt Matt Ratana

Officers from the Met and forces nationwide paused for a minute’s silence at 11am today to honour Sergeant Matt Ratana, one week after his tragic murder.

Commissioner Cressida Dick led the solemn tribute outside the Empress State Building in west London, joined by her management board and numerous colleagues.

Tributes Pour In for Beloved Sergeant

Those who worked alongside Matt have shared heartfelt memories, painting a picture of a dedicated and compassionate officer.

“Matt was one of the most caring, passionate and dedicated officers I have ever had the privilege to work alongside,” said Chief Inspector Craig Knight, who worked with Matt in croydon/" title="Croydon" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Croydon and on public order duties.

“I often assigned him tasks knowing he’d handle them flawlessly, putting others’ welfare first. I recall him gently reminding me during a chaotic public order situation that I couldn’t command from the thick of it – his calmness allowed me to refocus and act.”

“He regularly went above and beyond to support fellow officers dealing with tough challenges. When Matt was on the case, you knew everything would be alright.

“Matt, I hope you’re relaxing now, enjoying the rugby with a beer in hand. Your work here is done. Your legacy will live on. You’ll be missed by us all.”

‘A Mentor and Friend’: Sergeant Chris Excell’s Moving Tribute

Sergeant Chris Excell, who knew Matt for over a decade, added: “Matt taught me everything. He was a mentor and a friend, always ready to chat and offer advice.

“He was caring, compassionate, and an exemplary officer. If you were down, his infectious spirit lifted you up.

“The last thing he told me was that a rubbish day only lasts 24 hours. Those words stay with me.”

Matt Ratana’s courage, kindness, and professionalism have left an indelible mark on colleagues and the community. The nation remembers him today and always.
