Quick-Thinking Cops Save Woman Trapped Under Lorry
Two off-duty Metropolitan Police officers have been hailed as heroes after saving a woman pinned beneath the rear wheels of a lorry. Inspectors Steph Day and Patrick Allen, both Tactical Firearms Commanders, were nearby when the terrifying incident unfolded in London.
Life-Saving Act in the Blink of an Eye
Inspector Day recalled hearing a scream and rushing to the scene. “I heard a scream, and we immediately knew something serious had happened,” she said. To her surprise, the woman was awake and talking despite the horrific injuries.
The officers acted fast to stop the woman from losing both legs. Remaining calm under pressure, their training kicked in instantly to treat the critical injuries until emergency crews arrived. “Her injuries were potentially catastrophic, but I knew that between us, we could make a difference,” said Inspector Day.
Being close to the Royal London Hospital gave them hope for the woman’s survival with swift medical care.
From Crisis to Recovery
Inspector Allen described how he supported the injured woman: “It became second nature, but there were moments when I was holding her hand, and I realised how hurt she really was.” He later visited her in hospital and was amazed by her strength. “She is miraculously walking again and plans to hike a mountain in Iceland — truly inspirational!”
New Roles, Same Dedication
Since the rescue, the two officers have moved on to new positions — Inspector Day now works in Royalty and Specialist Protection, while Inspector Allen heads an Emergency Response Team in Hackney. Their bond remains strong.
“Steph is a lovely, funny person who made work a joy. I hope we can work together again,” said Inspector Allen.
Inspector Day praised Allen’s humour and support during tough times.
Reflecting on the incident, Inspector Day reminded us of the everyday bravery of frontline officers: “Thousands of officers working across London and the UK do this kind of lifesaving work every day. We were just in the right place at the right time — every single one of us would have done the same.”
