Greenwich Tops Sexual Offence Charts in Nightlife Venues Since 2020
Shocking new data reveals Greenwich leads London boroughs in sexual offences at bars, pubs, and nightclubs since 2020. Freedom of Information figures from the Metropolitan Police show 11 rapes and 45 other sexual crimes reported in venues across Greenwich from January 2020 to February 2024.
Other Boroughs Hit But Less Severely
- Bromley recorded 28 sexual offences but no rapes during the same period.
- Lewisham reported four cases of rape and 23 other offences.
- Bexley logged three rapes and 22 additional sexual offences.
- Data for Southwark was not available.
Council Pledges £1.3 Million to Boost Women’s Safety
A Greenwich Council spokesperson hailed survivors for reporting crimes but admitted many still fear coming forward. The council is serious about stopping violence against women and girls, investing £1.3 million in its Women’s Safety Plan and Serious Violence Strategy.
Measures include making street harassment a criminal offence, ramping up CCTV and street lighting, and rolling out education programmes to tackle misogyny. They also work with police and local partners via the Safer Greenwich Partnership to crack down on offenders and inspect licensed venues closely.
Campaigns and Reporting Urged
The council backs campaigns like ‘Good Night Out’ and ‘Ask for Angela’ to train staff at bars and clubs on handling sexual harassment disclosures. Authorities urge victims of rape or sexual assault to report incidents swiftly by calling 101, 999 in emergencies, or visiting a police station.
With ongoing concerns about nightlife safety, Greenwich and neighbouring boroughs continue fighting to make nights out safe for everyone.
