Cold-Blooded Killer Caught After Murdering Mum-of-Three in Her Own Home

Shocking Murder Shakes Quiet Village

The nightmare began with a grainy CCTV snapshot of a hooded man lurking near Clair Ablewhite’s cottage in Colston Bassett. On the night of Saturday, 26 February, police arrived at the Hall Lane home to find the 47-year-old mum-of-three dead in her pyjamas, stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest.

Clair’s killer left barely a trace—no murder weapon, no DNA except bloodied shoe prints inside her home. Her mobile phone was missing. The isolated location meant CCTV and witnesses were scarce. Detectives knew this would be tough.

Detectives Zero In on the Killer

Detective Inspector Mel Crutchley, leading the hunt, said, “I formed the opinion early that Clair’s killer was someone she knew. There was no forced entry, no sign of burglary, and the wounds were chillingly personal.”

Clair, a Bingham native, had recently started fresh after a split from her husband. Renting a cottage and launching her own dog walking business, she was well liked and sociable—until someone snuffed out her new life.

Police grilled over 20 people connected to Clair, scoured local cameras, and followed every lead. Then a breakthrough came from an unlikely hero: Clair’s neighbour, working in France. He spotted the attacker on his CCTV, complete with audio that captured the deadly assault. The neighbour rushed home so police could seize the footage.

Key Clues Crack the Case

  • The CCTV showed a hooded man wearing Adidas trainers—the same that left bloody footprints in Clair’s kitchen.
  • His rucksack style suggested he walked or biked to the scene; no vehicle was spotted.
  • A faulty reflector on the bike became the tell-tale marker.
  • Digging deeper, police found Clair’s water-damaged phone in a nearby stream and retrieved messages pointing to 26-year-old John Jessop from Newark.

Jessop, who had a past intimate relationship with Clair, cycled 17 miles each way to commit the murder—stopping to buy a pasty en route. CCTV matched his jacket, and suspiciously, he left his phone at home the fateful night. Even more damning: he’d deleted Google Maps the day before.

Justice Served at Nottingham Crown Court

On 11 March, Jessop was charged with Clair’s murder. He pleaded guilty on 12 October, and today (4 January) was jailed for 20 years—serving at least 17 years and eight months behind bars.

DI Crutchley praised the relentless team effort: “The CCTV trail was key in tracking Jessop’s route. A massive thanks to Clair’s neighbour whose footage kickstarted the breakthrough.”

“Jessop showed no remorse and gave no apology. While Clair’s dad tried CPR on his daughter, Jessop was enjoying a pint with mates. He brutally took a loving mum, daughter, sister and friend from us all.”

“Though today’s sentence can’t bring Clair back, it means Jessop will spend decades behind bars. I hope this offers solace to her family.”
