Police Dogs Get High-Tech Armour to Fight Danger
Staffordshire Police are rolling out custom lightweight body armour to protect their four-legged heroes from knives, bullets, spikes, and blunt force. The gear is designed for both general purpose and drugs-sniffing dogs, offering top-notch defence in the line of duty.
Next-Level Protection After Finn’s Law
The new armour was picked after rigorous trials by UK forces, focusing on protection, durability, and comfort. It even features cutting-edge lining material originally created for space suits to keep dogs cool under pressure. Sizes vary to fit different breeds and roles perfectly.
This upgrade comes after the introduction of ‘Finn’s Law’ in 2019 — named after German Shepherd Finn, stabbed defending PC Dave Wardell during a robbery in 2016. The law toughened penalties for attacking service animals, closing loopholes that used to treat such attacks as mere criminal damage.
Chief Inspector: Dogs Deserve Same Respect as Officers
“Police dogs are part of our policing family, one of the team and should be valued the same as our police officers,” said Chief Inspector Dave Kelsall, head of the Armed/Dog Support Unit.
He added: “Giving them personal body armour is the next step to protecting our dogs who often face dangers first. They now have the same protection to reduce the risk of serious injury or death.”
Kelsall hailed the move as a proud moment, praising Staffordshire Police’s investment and the dog support officers’ efforts to find the perfect kit.
