Top Cop Watchdog Boss Resigns Amid Mystery Probe
Michael Lockwood, chief of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), quit on Friday citing “personal and domestic reasons”. But Home Secretary Suella Braverman revealed on Saturday that Mr Lockwood faced an investigation over a historical allegation. She said he was told to resign or face suspension – and accepted his immediate departure.

The Home Secretary gave no details about the allegation but confirmed the Home Office is now working with the IOPC to set up temporary leadership. The surprise move came just a day after Mr Lockwood announced his resignation with “great sadness.”
“It has been an enormous privilege to serve as the organisation’s first director general,” Lockwood said.
Trailblazer of Police Watchdog Steps Down
- Lockwood was the first to lead IOPC since it replaced the Independent Police Complaints Commission in 2018.
- The IOPC handles the most serious police misconduct cases across England and Wales.
- He previously led recovery efforts after the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, working closely with bereaved families and survivors.
- A qualified accountant, Lockwood also worked at the National Audit Office and Local Government Association.
Details on the historical allegation remain under wraps as the investigation continues.
