Chaos on the Cards as Royal Mail and University Staff Join Nationwide Strikes
Today sees a massive wave of strikes hitting Royal Mail workers, university lecturers, and sixth-form college staff over pay disputes. It’s shaping up to be one of the biggest labour clashes in recent years, with picket lines popping up across the country.
Royal Mail Strikes Threaten Christmas Deliveries
Royal Mail is warning that ongoing postal strikes could “hold Christmas to ransom” for millions of customers. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is planning several more stoppages, including a wild Christmas Eve strike, threatening festive parcel chaos.
“Royal Mail bosses are risking a Christmas meltdown because of their stubborn refusal to treat their employees with respect,” said Dave Ward, CWU general secretary. “Postal workers want to deliver Christmas gifts but won’t meekly accept the casualisation of their jobs.”
The CWU has already announced strikes on December 1, 9, 11, 14, 15, 23, and 24 — a dark cloud over the busiest postal period of the year.
Strike Storm Sweeps Across Sectors
- Nurses, rail workers, and ambulance drivers are gearing up for strikes in December and January.
- The Rail, Maritime and Transport union plans four 48-hour railway strikes from mid-December through January.
- The Royal College of Nursing confirms walkouts on December 15 and 20.
- Ambulance workers, represented by Unison, aim to strike before Christmas, though dates remain unconfirmed.
- Firefighters are set to vote on strike action after rejecting a 5% pay rise.
- Bus drivers at Abellio and Metroline have several December strike dates lined up.
On top of this, around 100,000 civil servants plan to strike between December and January, adding to the mounting pressure on essential services.
Education Staff Join Pay Protest Fury
Sixth-form college staff across 77 colleges in England have voted overwhelmingly for strike action following real-terms pay cuts of 20% since 2010. Members of the National Education Union (NEU) are taking a stand in a major show of strength.
“Members take strike action with great reluctance, but the effects of real-terms pay losses are simply too urgent to ignore,” said Dr Mary Bousted, NEU joint general secretary. “These cuts are causing a professional exodus.”
No End in Sight for Rail Dispute
Rail union RMT has called eight days of strikes across December and January after talks with Transport Secretary Mark Harper failed to resolve ongoing disputes over jobs, pay, and conditions.
