Top Cop Dean Haydon Takes the Helm as UK’s New Counter Terror Chief
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon has been named the new Senior National Coordinator (SNC) for counter terrorism policing. Haydon replaces Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, who moved up to lead the Met’s Specialist Operations back in March.
Counter Terrorism Veteran Steps Up
Before this appointment, DAC Haydon led the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command since late 2015. He handled intense pressure, steering investigations into last year’s deadly London terrorist attacks amid soaring demands.
Three Decades of Policing Expertise
With over 30 years under his belt, Haydon’s resume covers major crime and specialist investigations. He’s also headed the Met’s Serious and Organised Crime unit and led the Trident 1 Crime Command, tackling some of London’s toughest cases.
High Praise from Met Brass
“Dean is one of the most experienced senior detectives in UK Counter Terrorism and major crime. He brings a wealth of operational and strategic wisdom to this demanding role,” said AC Neil Basu.
“His steady hand will give CT policing the stability it needs after an unprecedented year in 2017. I look forward to working closely with him.”
DAC Haydon added: “I’m honoured to take on the role of Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing. There is a fantastic group of dedicated, skilled, and professional officers and staff across the UK counter terror network. I’m eager to work with them to tackle the threats we face.”
