Transport Boost Promises Economic Surge for Scotland
Transport Minister Richard Holden ramped up plans to supercharge Scottish connectivity and economic growth during his visit on 3 April 2023. Sitting down with local businesses and community leaders, he reaffirmed the UK government’s dedication to sustainable transport and unveiled fresh investments under the 123 Deal — a massive £1 billion funding boost for major infrastructure in Glasgow and surrounding areas.
Hydrogen-Powered, Self-Driving Trucks Lead the Way
Glasgow is at the forefront of a carbon-free future. New hydrogen-powered and self-driving trucks are being developed to slash emissions and drive Scotland into the fast lane of sustainable transport innovation. Minister John Lamont said:
“UK government investment is helping power Scotland into the fast lane of sustainable transport innovation and delivering improved connectivity – levelling up the UK and bringing communities closer together.”
“From hydrogen-powered and self-driving trucks in Glasgow, to regenerating Ravenscraig’s roads, rail, cycling and walking paths, plus a new ferry to protect Fair Isle and a green transport hub in Dundee — we’re transforming journeys, boosting growth, and protecting the planet.”
“But there’s more to do. We’ll keep working closely with the Scottish Government and local partners to give travellers the transport they want and businesses the support they need.”
Cracking Connectivity: Roads, Rail and Flights on the Agenda
Minister Holden’s talks focused on ramping up investments in roads, railways, and domestic flights linking Scotland to the rest of the UK. This will turbocharge links and spark new economic opportunities across regions.
Research backs this push, with 60% of people saying better UK transport links would positively impact their nation. Holden’s tour continues with upcoming visits to Northern Ireland and Wales — clearly signalling a UK-wide drive to get the wheels turning.
