South Wales Special Constables Armed with Tasers for First Time Ever
Big news from South Wales Police! Two Special Constables and a Special Inspector have become the first volunteer officers in force history to carry Tasers. This comes after a recent change in national law that now allows volunteer officers to be equipped with the devices.
Volunteers Step Up with Taser Training
Although Special Constables have held the same powers as regular officers for years, they were not legally authorised to carry Tasers until last year. Following the legislative shift, Special Constables Jason Francis and Ben Johns completed the rigorous three-day Taser training course. They’re now armed and ready to better protect themselves, their colleagues, and the public.
Joining them is Special Inspector Jonathan Edwards, a Special Forces veteran with 26 years’ experience. Edwards has trained others on Taser use for five years but was only just allowed to carry one himself.
Special Inspector Edwards Speaks Out
“As volunteer officers, we deploy alongside regulars and face the same dangers and hostility. It’s heartening the law finally reflects that,” said SI Edwards.
“No officer is forced to carry a Taser—it’s a personal choice. Most of the time talking peacefully is enough, but when force is necessary, it’s reassuring volunteers now have that option.”
Chief Constable Praises Special Constabulary
Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan said: “Our Special Constabulary is invaluable, showing the same courage and professionalism as regular officers. Many volunteers dedicate over 1,000 hours a year.”
“All 114 special officers will have the chance to train with Tasers if eligible. Although Tasers are rarely discharged, their presence is often enough to defuse tense situations.”
“I’ve always supported officers being as safe as possible. Tasers are an important operational tool that protects both officers and the public.”
Who Qualifies for Taser Training?
