‘I Cried All Night When I Found Him’: Community Pays Tribute to Man Killed in Hackney Stabbing

A community in Hackney has been left heartbroken after a 20-year-old man was fatally stabbed on Tuesday evening, prompting an outpouring of grief and calls for action against rising knife crime.

The young man, whose identity has not yet been formally released, was pronounced dead at the scene on Bodney Road, E5 after the Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service responded to reports of a stabbing around 6 PM on February 18. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the victim succumbed to a fatal stab wound.

Two men, aged 23 and 25, were arrested later that evening on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

‘He Was Like Family to Me’ – Grieving Friends and Neighbours Speak Out

In the aftermath of the tragedy, local residents and friends gathered near the crime scene to pay tribute to the young man, described by many as a “good guy” who was deeply loved by those who knew him.

A woman, who identified herself as a close family friend, tearfully shared her shock and grief: “What did he do to deserve this? He was like a family friend to me and my son. The day before yesterday, I saw him and he gave me a massive hug. Last night, I cried all night when I found out it was him. That he’s dead.”

Another friend, visibly shaken, described the victim as someone who avoided conflict. “He was a good guy, he knew everyone around here. He was not a troublemaker — in fact, if there was trouble, he would walk away. I loved him like a brother.”

Locals expressed disbelief that such violence could happen in their neighborhood. Ms. Johnson, a resident of the area, said, “I have not seen this kind of thing here before. I always felt safe in this area.”

Investigation Ongoing as Police Appeal for Witnesses

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that a crime scene remains in place on Bodney Road while forensic teams continue to examine the area.

Detective Superintendent Vicky Tunstall, who is leading the investigation, extended her condolences to the victim’s family and urged the public to assist in the ongoing inquiry. “Our thoughts are with the young man’s family at this incredibly difficult time. I am grateful to the people of Hackney for their patience while we conduct our enquiries. We know this is a distressing time for residents, and they can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.

“While we have made initial arrests, there is still work to be done. If anyone has any information — particularly dashcam, doorbell, or phone footage from Bodney Road between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM — please contact us via 101 quoting reference 5635/17FEB, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

A Growing Knife Crime Crisis

This incident marks the fifth fatal stabbing in London so far this year, highlighting the continuing knife crime epidemic plaguing the capital. Four of the five victims have been adult males, and one was 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa, who was killed earlier this year.

In response to rising concerns, the Home Office announced a new set of anti-knife crime measures on Wednesday, including requiring retailers to report bulk or suspicious knife sales and increasing penalties for selling illegal blades, such as “zombie knives,” or weapons to minors. The proposed legislation, known as Ronan’s Law, is named in memory of Ronan Kanda, who was fatally stabbed in a mistaken identity attack.

A Community in Mourning

As forensic teams continued their work on Wednesday, floral tributes and candles appeared near the scene, a somber reminder of a young life lost too soon. The victim’s mother, who has not yet spoken publicly, was said to be “devastated” by the news.

A local youth worker reflected on the broader impact the tragedy will have on the community. “It’s heartbreaking. Another young life gone, another family shattered. We need more support for our young people to stop these senseless acts of violence.”

The investigation remains active, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward. In the meantime, the Hackney community continues to mourn the loss of a young man remembered as kind-hearted and loved by many.
