O2 to Scrap PAYG Data-Only SIMs by January 2025 – Thousands Hit!
O2 Ends PAYG Mobile Broadband & iPad Data Sims
O2 has confirmed it will wave goodbye to its pay-as-you-go (PAYG) data-only SIM service on 31 January 2025. This move hits thousands who rely on O2’s mobile broadband and iPad data plans.
- All PAYG Mobile Broadband & iPad services end on 31 January 2025.
- Customers got warnings via email and must use up any remaining data before shutdown.
- Got unused data? You can claim a refund by calling 0344 8090222.
O2’s Official Message to Customers
“We’re sorry to let you know that we’re removing our Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband & iPad services from our portfolio on January 31, 2025. Our customer account management portal will close on December 17, 2024. You can keep using your service until January 31, 2025, after which it will cease.”
Why Is O2 Pulling the Plug?
An O2 spokesperson told The Sun:
“From January 31, we are removing our PAYG Mobile Broadband and iPad services, which stopped new sign-ups in August. We’ve contacted the small number affected and are ready to support them. Meanwhile, O2 still offers great pay monthly SIMs for iPads, tablets, and broadband.”
What Customers Are Losing
O2’s PAYG data deals were popular for their flexibility and affordability:
- 1GB for £3 – valid 24 hours
- 2GB for £10 – valid 90 days
- 8GB for £20 – valid 90 days
- 12GB for £30 – valid for a full year
Long-term users on the £30 yearly plan face a particularly tough hit when the service shuts down.
What You Need to Do Now
- Burn through any leftover data before 31 January 2025.
- Call 0344 8090222 to get a refund on unused data.
- Check out alternative O2 plans or switch to other networks for mobile broadband needs.
O2’s Recent Moves
- Stopped new PAYG data-only sign-ups back in August 2024.
- Rolled out AI-powered scam call detection to protect customers.
- Expanded access to the National Databank in all O2 stores for extra customer support.
O2 advises all affected customers to get in touch with their customer service teams for help with refunds and finding new broadband options.
