South Shields Man Slaps Passenger Over Mask Row on Metro Train
James Rutherford, 21, from South Shields, has been handed a 12-month jail term after attacking a fellow passenger on a Metro train. He also received an extra three months for unrelated offences, following his sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court on September 23.
Violent Brawl on Board
On Sunday, May 2, chaos broke out between Pelaw and Fellgate Metro stations. A passenger asked Rutherford and two others to wear masks. Tempers flared, and Rutherford responded by slapping the man hard in the face.
The trio then forced open the train carriage doors to make their escape. The victim suffered serious injuries, including multiple facial fractures and a broken finger.
Police Crack Down on Rail Violence
Rutherford was tracked down and arrested after a public appeal. Detective Constable Shaun Kelly warned, “This sentence should serve as a stark warning to others that violence will never be tolerated on the railway.”
He added, “If you’re a victim or witness to violence on the railway, report it immediately by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40. In emergencies, dial 999.”
