Knife-wielding thug jailed after terrifying train robbery bid in Liverpool
Bladed attack on vulnerable victim
James Donnelly, from Stormont Road, Garston, admitted attempted robbery and carrying a knife at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, 26 January. The court heard how on Sunday, 27 December, Donnelly punched a 56-year-old man in the face and demanded his watch.
The victim, who is partially sighted, refused. Enraged, Donnelly pulled out an eight-inch knife and pressed it against the man’s stomach, threatening to “stab him up” if he didn’t comply.
Heroic victim fights back
Despite fearing for his life, the victim resisted. Donnelly eventually sheathed the knife and returned to his seat. The attacker got off at Liverpool Central, where he discarded the weapon. Station staff quickly apprehended him before British Transport Police arrested him.
Cowardly assault leaves lasting scars
“This was a cowardly and completely unprovoked attack on a man who was simply minding his own business,” said DS Ian Henderson, who led the investigation. “The victim has suffered greatly both physically and psychologically. He suffers anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks. The punch caused injuries requiring multiple dentist visits and forced him to take time off work, hitting his livelihood.”
DC Dom Wilcox added: “The sentence handed down reflects the severity of the crime and trauma caused. The railway’s extensive CCTV network helped ensure justice was swift.”
Merseyrail vows to keep passengers safe
Greg Suligowski, Head of Communications at Merseyrail, commented: “We work hard to make our network safe for customers and staff. We were deeply concerned by this serious incident and fully supported the investigation.”
“Thankfully, such crimes are rare, and we remain committed to working closely with British Transport Police to keep it that way.”
