A 29-year-old man faces jail after racially abusing staff and spitting at a police officer during his arrest in Margate.
Beer Theft Sparks Racist Rant and Assault
Thomas Mason was caught stealing and drinking cans of beer from a High Street shop on the afternoon of Sunday, 26 April 2020. When challenged by staff, he unleashed a torrent of racist abuse.
Another man tried to intervene, only to be met with more racial insults and then physical assault from Mason.
Police Arrest Ends in Threats and Spitting
Officers arrived and arrested Mason, who became aggressive towards them, spitting at a police officer and threatening to kill his family.
Mason, who has no fixed address, was charged the next day with racially-aggravated assault, theft, assaulting a police officer, and racially-aggravated public order offences.
Guilty Plea and Custody Ahead of Sentencing
Appearing via virtual link at Medway Magistrates’ Court on 28 April, Mason pleaded guilty to all charges. He was remanded in custody and awaits sentencing on 14 May.
