Cat Scam Thief Busted After Targeting Elderly Victims

Fake Cat Story Used in Heartless Burglaries

Daniela Stoica of the Green was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday (November 11). She’d already pleaded guilty in September to two counts of dwelling burglary.

Stoica’s sneaky crimes involved pretending to look for her lost cat to gain entry into elderly victims’ homes. The first attack happened on April 26 on Eastleigh Road, Havant. Stoica knocked on the door of an 80-something couple and spun her tale. While the duo stepped into the garden to help, a man slipped inside trying to nick valuables. Luckily, nothing was taken.

Two days later in Bagshot, Stoica used the same trick on another elderly couple—a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s. Once again, she claimed she’d lost her cat to lure them outside. This time, the accomplice stole jewellery and watches worth more than £30,000.

An investigation pinpointed a vehicle tied to Stoica, which was stopped in South Wales on April 29. Stoica was arrested and charged with two counts of dwelling burglary.

Officers Praise Cross-Force Teamwork

PC Kirsty Watts from Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Hawk called Stoica’s behaviour “despicable” for exploiting kind, trusting elderly victims. She said, “The impact of having your home burgled should not be underestimated. I’m really pleased we secured justice for these victims.”

She added, “This sentence sends a clear message: We will pursue offenders nationwide to protect the innocent.”

PC Kat Sandys of Surrey Police emphasised the importance of collaboration. “Crime has no borders. We work swiftly with other forces to share intelligence, track down criminals, and make arrests.”
