Freelance Thief Jailed for Targeting Elderly Man in Gosport
Michelle Jewell, 42, homeless and on the run, broke into an 80-year-old man’s flat on Clarence Road, Gosport, on 1 December 2021. She swiped two wallets and then used the stolen bank cards to buy goods at local shops.
Swift Police Action Lands Jewell Behind Bars
The Operation Hawk team quickly closed in, arresting Jewell and charging her with burglary and two counts of fraud by false representation. She pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court on 13 January.
29 Months Inside for Preying on Vulnerable Victim
Appearing again at court on Tuesday 18 January, Jewell was sentenced to 29 months in prison.
“Jewell took advantage of an elderly man by striking up a conversation with him in the street before following him home and inviting herself into his flat,” said DC Hannah Mosely of Operation Hawk.
“She knew exactly what her intentions were from the outset, and I am pleased that she has been brought to justice so swiftly.”
“Burglary is an awful crime which leaves people feeling vulnerable and unsettled in their own home – a place where they should always feel safe.”
“We encourage people to keep reporting any suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhood to us so we can target areas affected, and prevent offending from happening.”
