Kent Police Extend Closure Order on Troubled St Nicholas Road Property
Kent Police have secured an extension on a closure order for a property on St Nicholas Road, following persistent complaints from local residents.
Order Renewed at Medway Magistrates’ Court
The extension was granted on Wednesday 5 July 2023 at Medway Magistrates’ Court. The original closure order, first approved in April, expired on 4 July. This renewed order stops anyone unauthorised from entering the premises.
Residents’ Complaints Spark Police Action
Officers acted after locals reported ongoing disturbances and anti-social behaviour linked to the property. PC Jamie Spencer said:
“Local people in the area reported concerns to us after having to endure disturbances and anti-social behaviour from those visiting and leaving this property.”
“Despite us attending to talk to the occupiers their behaviour did not improve so we took steps to remove them from the property. This extension allows us to ensure they do not return to the property and cause further concerns for those living nearby.”
“We understand that ASB is often caused by a minority but can affect a majority and we remain dedicated to responding robustly and ensuring the problem is tackled head on.”
Legal Powers and Consequences
The order uses the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. Southern Housing has now taken possession of the house. Anyone caught entering without permission faces a fine and could spend up to 51 weeks in prison.
This crackdown is part of Kent Police’s wider Safer Summer initiative aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour across the region.
