West London Man Jailed for Sharing Sensitive Military Secrets
Amine Matthew Sabrane Conroy, 25, from west London, has been slammed with a four-year jail sentence at Kingston Crown Court on Wednesday, 16 December. The young man admitted a host of serious charges back on 5 November.
Shocking Offences Revealed
Conroy pleaded guilty to:
- One count of sharing info about armed forces – breaching the Terrorism Act 2000 (section 58A)
- Five counts of collecting or possessing intelligence useful for terrorism – also under Terrorism Act 2000 (section 58)
- Two counts of owning extreme pornographic images – under the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008
How The Crime Came To Light
The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, working with the Ministry of Defence, uncovered that Conroy emailed sensitive military info on 1 May 2020. Disturbingly, he had already gathered much of this classified intelligence before being discharged from the British Army in February that year.
Conroy was arrested three days after the email sent on 1 May. Officers took a deep dive into his digital life, finding copies of the secret docs on his devices and proof he was the sender. They also unearthed extreme pornographic images during their search.
Strong Words from the Met
“There is no doubt that the information Conroy copied and then emailed out had the potential to put the safety and security of military personnel at increased risk,” said Commander Richard Smith, Head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.
“Today’s sentence should make it absolutely clear that there are very serious consequences for anyone who chooses to do this sort of thing.
“Police and the military take this extremely seriously and we will seek to identify, arrest and prosecute anyone responsible for putting others’ lives at risk through the illegal sharing of sensitive information that could then be used by those with hostile or terrorist intent.”
Conroy was formally charged on 29 June and has now paid the price for compromising national security.
