Bungling Thief Nabbed After Fumbling £1,225 Jewellery Heist
Samuel Neculai made a bold move on a busy High Street shop at 11am on Thursday 22 February 2024. Asking to inspect a luxurious bracelet worth £1,225, he seemed calm as a staff member handed over the prized item from behind the glass display.
Quick-Thinking Staff Stop Theft in Its Tracks
Almost instantly, Neculai tried to make a run for it. But the shop worker was sharp, blocking his exit while another employee locked the door. The duo managed to wrestle the bracelet back as Neculai yanked at the door handle in a desperate bid to escape.
Worried for their safety, the staff finally let Neculai flee the scene. However, police were quickly alerted, and forensic experts found Neculai’s fingerprints on the shop door.
Thief Faces Justice After Guilty Plea
Neculai, aged 21 and from Cobham Street, Gravesend, was arrested on Friday 15 March. He was charged that very day with attempted robbery and criminal damage.
At Maidstone Crown Court, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Monday 20 May 2024 to one year and nine months behind bars. He was also slapped with a victim surcharge.
Police Praise Staff for Heroic Actions
“Neculai targeted a high-value item of jewellery but was foiled by the quick-thinking actions of those working at the business,” said investigating officer PC Elli Langford.
“Not only did he leave the shop empty-handed, but he incriminated himself by leaving his fingerprints behind. This was a shocking incident for the employees who feared they would be harmed during the ordeal. I hope that today’s sentence offers them reassurance and acts as a deterrent to other would-be criminals.”
