Speed Demon Jailed for Dangerous Police Chase and Drug Driving in Epsom
Nicholas Hazell’s High-Speed Nightmare Ends Behind Bars
Nicholas Hazell, 37, from Leatherhead, has been locked up for two years after a dramatic police pursuit in Epsom. Hazell’s crime spree included dangerous driving, fleeing police, drug driving, and possession of an offensive weapon.
70mph in a 30mph Zone Sparks Police Chase
The chaos unfolded in the early hours of 30 May when Hazell’s vehicle triggered ANPR cameras after ignoring police orders to stop. He then sped through Epsom at 70mph in a 30mph limit before crashing on Chatsworth Road. Trying to dodge capture, Hazell ran but officers caught him nearby.
Drug-Fuelled Denial and Hidden Weapons
Initially, Hazell denied involvement, despite personal belongings found in the car. Later, he claimed to be a passenger but refused to name the driver. While in custody, he dropped a sachet containing crystal meth. A roadside drug test confirmed he was under the influence. Police also discovered a wooden cosh inside the vehicle.
Justice Served at Guildford Crown Court
Following a three-day trial, Hazell was convicted on all charges, including driving whilst disqualified and failing to provide an evidential sample. Sentenced on 13 November, he now faces two years behind bars.
“Hazell’s reckless driving could have seriously injured or even killed an innocent member of the public. I hope this sentence reassures the public that offences such as these will not be tolerated,” said PC Gemma Morgan.
