Met Police Speak Out

Matt Jukes, Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations, expressed his condolences, saying: “I want to send my deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sir David Amess, who died so tragically last Friday. Sir David’s dedication to his family, his constituents, and his community has left a lasting impact.”

He added: “Today’s charge is a significant milestone, but the investigation by our Counter Terrorism Command will continue at pace. There has been a lot of speculation about the background and motivation of the man charged.”

Jukes urged the public to exercise restraint when commenting to avoid prejudicing upcoming court proceedings.

Attorney General Warns Media and Public

The Attorney General’s Office issued a stern warning on 18 October, reminding editors, publishers, and social media users about the Contempt of Court Act 1981. Following Ali’s arrest on 15 October in Essex, proceedings are now active, and strict liability under the Act applies.

The Office warned against publishing material that assumes guilt or interferes with justice—either online or offline. They stressed that they will monitor media coverage closely and urged everyone to comply fully with their legal responsibilities to avoid contempt charges.
