Rapist Caught After 23 Years – Justice Finally Served
Gulzar Hussain, 40, from Tower Hamlets, has been found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court of a brutal 1997 rape. The sentencing is set for Thursday, 13 May.
Night Out Turns Nightmare
On 17 October 1997, a woman in her early 30s was heading home after a night out with colleagues in Canary Wharf. Her DLR train unexpectedly ended early at Shadwell station, so she sought a taxi.
Two men claiming to be Good Samaritans offered help and led her to King Edward Memorial Park in Wapping. There, both men viciously raped her.
Cold Case Reopened – Killer Finally Exposed
Police launched a major investigation but hit dead ends initially. The case went cold until 2007 when new forensic evidence helped convict one attacker, who got nine years in prison in 2008.
A decade later, fresh forensic breakthroughs identified Hussain as the second attacker. After being interviewed and charged, he was convicted following the recent trial.
Detective’s Message: Justice Can Come Late, But It Will Come
“Twenty-three years have passed since this wicked and cowardly attack by two 17-year-olds,” said Detective Constable Mark Crane. “They exploited the victim’s trust and committed a horrific assault. Even though one man was jailed years ago, the victim lived knowing the other was free. Now, Hussain’s lies have been exposed.”
“I hope the court hands down a hefty sentence, and the victim finds peace knowing both attackers are behind bars.”
“To anyone suffering historic abuse: Specialized teams at the Met are ready to listen and act. No matter how long ago it happened, we will take your report seriously and fight to bring offenders to justice.”
