East London Man Jailed for Trying to Buy Grenade to Target Police
Mohammed Chowdhury, 24, from Bethnal Green, east London, was locked up for nine years after police foiled his plot to buy a hand grenade. Officers made the arrest in February 2020 during a proactive operation.
Explosive Plans Found on His Devices
After arresting Chowdhury, cops raided his home and confiscated digital devices. Investigators discovered he had downloaded detailed guides and recipes for making explosives. Handwritten notes with chemical formulas and bomb diagrams were also found, copied from the manuals on his phone.
Targeting a Police Station
While bailed awaiting trial, Chowdhury told family he planned to use the grenade against a police station. On 18 November 2020, he admitted to possessing documents likely to aid terrorism. In February 2021, a court found him guilty of attempting to possess an explosive with intent to endanger life, under the Explosives Substance Act 1883.
Police Praise Vigilance, Urge Public to Report Suspicious Activity
Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “Chowdhury’s actions show a blatant intent to cause serious harm. His attempts to acquire a grenade for use against police were extremely worrying. Thanks to this investigation, the public is safer.”
