Brutal City Centre Attack: Man Jailed for Life-Changing Assault
Claudio Campos, 28, from Ladybarn Lane, Manchester, was sentenced to three years behind bars yesterday at Manchester Crown Court. Campos pleaded guilty to savagely assaulting 62-year-old community leader Avtar Singh.
Unprovoked Punch Leaves Victim Fighting for Life
The horrifying attack unfolded on the evening of June 23, 2022. Avtar was walking home through the Tib Street area in Manchester city centre when Campos, accompanied by his partner, sneaked up behind him and landed a vicious blow to his head.
Avtar collapsed into the middle of the road, unconscious until a passer-by flagged down an ambulance. He remains hospitalised with a devastating brain injury that has robbed him of sight and mobility on his right side.
Police Appeal Leads to Arrest
Greater Manchester Police released CCTV footage to the public, urging witnesses to come forward. Thanks to vital tips, Campos was arrested in September and immediately confessed to the brutal assault.
Detective Inspector Mark Astbury said: “This was a horrific attack on a much loved family member and community leader which deeply shocked the public.
“I hope today’s verdict gives Mr Singh’s family some relief that the person who harmed their husband and father has faced justice and will serve time in prison.”
“We thank the public for their help and send our thoughts to Mr Singh, hoping he can return home soon.”
Family Speaks Out: A Life Shattered
Avtar’s family shared a heartfelt statement:
“When our dad came to this country over 30 years ago, he never imagined suffering such a heinous, life-altering attack that’s left him bedbound in hospital.
“We are heartbroken, struggling to face the reality of his future. He didn’t deserve this brutal assault, which caused permanent sight loss and paralysis down his right side.
“Though we’ll never get our strong, powerful dad back, we are satisfied the court delivered justice.
“Avtar is a brilliant, gentle soul who has devoted his life to helping others as a father, husband, and priest. This attack has scarred not just our family, but an entire community.
“We thank everyone for their support and the dedication of Greater Manchester Police. But our fight continues as Avtar battles to reclaim any quality of life.
“Now, we no longer feel safe walking through Manchester city centre, where this cruel, unprovoked attack happened.
“Our dad came here to work hard and preach kindness. It’s a tragedy that someone left an elderly man for dead in the street.
“The law has won this round, but nothing can restore the strength and happiness our dad once had.”
