Gunman Jailed After Threatening Bailiffs and Pointing Weapon at Police
Richard Todd, 52, from Foxberry Road SE4, has been locked up for five years at Woolwich Crown Court. He admitted to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear, owning a prohibited weapon, and carrying ammunition without a certificate.
Bailiffs Threatened at Home
On Wednesday, 16 November, two County Court bailiffs arrived at Todd’s house with a repossession warrant. After gaining entry, they were shocked to find Todd brandishing a handgun. Terrified, the bailiffs quickly left and called the police.
Police Standoff Ends with Arrest
Firearms officers arrived promptly to confront Todd. He pointed the gun at them, sparking a tense 20-minute standoff. Thanks to skilled negotiation, the officers convinced him to drop the weapon. He was swiftly apprehended.
Deadly Arsenal Found at Todd’s Home
- Further searches uncovered 25 bullets, 24 shotgun shells, and a bulletproof vest.
- The firearm was a revolver-style air pistol converted into a deadly, live weapon loaded with six rounds.
Detective Constable Theo 1, South East Command Unit, said: “No one expects a gun pointed at them while doing their job. This was a truly terrifying ordeal for the bailiffs. Our firearms team showed incredible professionalism in defusing the situation. The outcome could have been far worse.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Donna Smith, Met Firearm Command, added: “This incident shows the bravery of our officers who handle around 4,000 firearms emergencies each year. Their communication skills helped resolve a dangerous situation safely. I’m immensely proud of their work.”
