Monster McCorkell Jailed for Vicious Murder of Girlfriend in Her Own Home

A man has been locked up for life after brutally murdering his girlfriend in her flat. David McCorkell, 54, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 12 December. He must serve at least 21-and-a-half years behind bars for the savage killing of 61-year-old Diane Dyer.

A Relationship Turned Deadly

McCorkell and Diane met just three months before the murder when she was out walking her dog. They quickly struck up a friendship that turned into a relationship. Diane lived alone in an apartment at Fairline Court, Oakwood Avenue, Beckenham. McCorkell visited almost daily, but soon friends noticed Diane growing withdrawn and painfully thin.

In the days before her death, Diane confided she was unhappy and scared of McCorkell. On Thursday, 18 July, neighbours heard a terrifying disturbance — a man shouting in rage and a woman screaming as if being battered repeatedly.

Horrific Discovery and Police Investigation

Later that evening, a friend tried to visit Diane but was answered by a blood-covered stranger claiming Diane wasn’t home and blaming a fight with a drug dealer for his state. The friend was suspicious but waited until the next day to alert police.

Another friend grew worried after failed calls and spotting the curtains drawn strangely open with furniture moved. She called police. At 11pm on 18 July, officers forced entry and found Diane brutally beaten to death in her bedroom. A post-mortem revealed she suffered 71 injuries, including bruises from repeated punches and stomps, and fatal strangulation.

Cold-Blooded Killer Caught

Detectives launched an immediate murder probe. McCorkell was named a prime suspect after telling a friend he had smothered Diane with a pillow over a dispute about his mother’s grave.

He was arrested on 23 July 2019 in Highbury Hill, found carrying a knife. Despite initially denying murder and claiming he loved Diane, McCorkell was charged and remanded in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell said: “The murder scene was truly horrendous — one of the most brutal killings I have seen. Diane was a vulnerable mother and grandmother killed in her own home. McCorkell exploited her for his evil gain. He had a violent history and was out on life-licence for robbery. This monster needed locking up to protect the public. I urge anyone fearing abuse from violent partners to contact police — you could save a life.”

Heartbroken Family Speak Out

Diane’s husband Les Dyer said: “Diane and I were married for nearly 41 years before separating amicably three years ago. She was loved by many and would always help anyone in need. McCorkell took advantage of her kind nature. We’ll never know why he attacked her, as he refused to talk to police. Our family has been devastated. My grandchildren, who still believe in Father Christmas, now know murderers exist. Diane should be here today, enjoying Christmas with us. We thank the police for their tireless efforts and support during this horrific time.”
