Man Jailed for Life After Scissors Stabbing Murder in Hackney
A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison after stabbing a 24-year-old through the heart with a pair of scissors.
Ozughan Altun, from Dalston Square, Hackney, must serve at least 19 years for the brutal 2019 murder of Michael Paul Baptista. He was convicted at Wood Green Crown Court, following a trial that revealed a twisted obsession and jealous rage.
Jealousy Fuels Fatal Attack
The court heard that Altun, fixated on Michael Baptista, attacked him after Michael visited near Altun’s shop in Walthamstow. The violent stabbing happened on December 19, 2019, on Bromley Road, Waltham Forest, leaving Michael dead at the scene.
Altun plunged the scissors into Michael five times, then left him to die on the street. Police, called to the altercation around 5:15pm, found Michael fatally wounded despite paramedics’ efforts.
Obsessed Killer’s Failed Lies
Altun tried to claim he was the victim, even ringing police to say Michael had attacked him. On the way to hospital, he lied about being stabbed and accused Michael of stalking his family.
Police arrested Altun at the hospital. They discovered chilling evidence on him, including a crude drawing of Michael and a note calling him “an idiot.” CCTV showed Altun threatening Michael before stabbing him, then disposing of the scissors.
Twisted Relationship Drama Ends in Murder
Investigation uncovered a tangled love triangle. Michael had briefly dated Altun’s ex-girlfriend before she returned to Altun, sparking jealousy. Michael tried to meet Altun to clear the air, but instead, Altun confronted and killed him.
Police found videos and messages on Altun’s phone revealing his obsession and anger leading up to the murder.
Detective Sergeant Gurj Singh said: “This violent incident happened in a residential street between two known parties. Michael Baptista’s family has been deeply affected by this tragedy. I pay tribute to their strength throughout the trial and hope they find closure through the justice system.”
The judge also praised three courageous witnesses and two key officers for their vital roles in the investigation.
