Michael Irons Jailed for Manslaughter After Fatal Road Rage Attack
Michael Irons, 26, from Bradwell, was slammed with a 10½-year prison sentence today at Norwich Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, dangerous driving, drink-driving, and causing death while uninsured.
The court also hit him with a 10-year driving ban and a four-year licence extension. Before he can drive again, Irons must pass an extended driving test.
Deadly Road Rage Incident Caught on Alexandra Road
On March 8, Irons was behind the wheel of a silver VW Golf with his partner and young daughter on board. Around 3:50 pm, he clashed with occupants of an Audi Q7 on Alexandra Road following a minor road spat.
After stopping, Irons reversed into another car and deliberately scraped his Golf along the Audi before fleeing the scene. He dropped off his passengers before returning to Crown Road to ram the parked Audi.
Elderly Woman Killed in Shocking Hit-and-Run
As Irons sped up Crown Road, he ran down 96-year-old Ivy Warnes, who was being helped across the street by her daughter. Ivy later died of her injuries in hospital.
Irons crashed into the Audi, tried to escape, but was caught by bystanders. During his arrest, he hurled racial abuse at the crowd.
In custody, Irons blew 55 micrograms – well over the legal drink-drive limit of 35.
Family and Police React to Tragedy
“Irons’ actions that day have left a family without a much loved mother, and our thoughts remain with them,” said DI Dave McCormack. “His shocking driving showed total disregard for others. Not only was he uninsured and intoxicated, but he turned his vehicle into a weapon, killing an elderly pedestrian.”
Jill Warnes, Ivy’s daughter, added: “Mum’s tragic death will haunt us forever. We ask for privacy during this heartbreaking time.”
