Brutal Canvey Attack: Man Jailed for 13 Years After Woman Left with Shattered Face
Michael Norfolk, 28, has been handed a hefty 13-year jail term after viciously assaulting a woman in Canvey, leaving her with severe facial injuries. The Thorney Bay Road resident was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, 14 February. He must also serve an additional five years on licence.
Attack Turns Deadly After Bottle Smashes During Argument
It all kicked off on Sunday, 25 August 2019, when Norfolk called the victim at her home, firing off unprovoked accusations. Just an hour later, he showed up and got aggressive fast. A heated argument ended with a bottle smashing on the floor.
As the woman bent down to pick up broken glass, she was suddenly knocked unconscious. Norfolk fled, leaving her bleeding and battered.
Victim’s Grit and Police Support Lead to Justice
The woman woke up days later in hospital with multiple facial fractures. Detective Constable Leanne Howes of Basildon’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Team praised her resilience.
“The victim has shown an enormous amount of bravery since being subjected to a cowardly, horrific and unprovoked assault,” DC Howes said.
“She only became aware of the bruising, swelling and fractures when she woke in hospital. She even joined me in court — a true testament to her courage.”
“Her abuser will now spend time behind bars to reflect on what he has done.”
Howes added the woman’s confidence has steadily grown thanks to ongoing support from the police, family, and friends.
Basildon DAIT Praise Victim’s Courage and Ongoing Recovery
Detective Inspector Sophie Hammonds also paid tribute to the victim’s strength and the dedicated support offered by DC Howes.
“It’s humbling to meet such a courageous young woman and witness the special bond she has with Leanne,” DI Hammonds said.
“Leanne stood by her throughout the trauma. It’s great to see she’s on the road to recovery.”
