Man Bites Police Officer in Shocking Salisbury Assault
Mark Archibald, 38, from Salisbury, has pleaded guilty to assault by beating, wounding with intent, and assaulting an emergency worker. He was sentenced on Friday, 9 October.
Officer Left with Severe Bite Wounds
During his arrest, Archibald viciously bit a police officer’s arm. The injuries were so severe that the officer needed hospital treatment and could be left with permanent scars.
Wiltshire Police Praise Brave Officers
Wiltshire Chief Constable Kier Pritchard hailed the officers’ calm and professional handling of the brutal incident. He said:
“Under the most challenging circumstances, they arrested this individual calmly and put public safety above their own. They are a credit to Wiltshire Police and should be proud.”
Details of the Attack
- The attack happened on 2 June after police responded to an emergency call about a man being assaulted on Fisherton Street.
- Officers chased Archibald to Elizabeth Gardens where he resisted arrest.
- He bit one officer deeply before being subdued with incapacitant spray.
Inspector Praises Officers’ Professionalism
Inspector Pete Sparrow condemned the crime as “abhorrent” and said the focus is on the heroism of the officers, especially a young officer who remained calm despite his horrific injuries. He added that Salisbury remains a safe, low-crime area in which to live and work.
