Brett Mullan Jailed for Armed Bookie Robberies Across London
Five Robberies in Just Three Weeks
Brett Mullan, 50, from Gravesend, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, August 1, after pleading guilty to a shocking spree of armed robberies. The crook hit bookmakers in Lee, Norwood, Sutton, and Crayford between April 4 and April 24.
Trains and CCTV Snared the Robber
The Met’s Flying Squad quickly worked out Mullan was travelling to and from the crimes by train. He slipped up when a railway ticket inspector stopped him onboard on April 13, just before his second robbery. Mullan handed over his real name, giving police the break they needed.
Officers then smashed the case wide open with CCTV footage showing him committing the robberies and heading back home.
Disguised Shotgun Found at Mullan’s Home
Police raided Mullan’s house and found a collapsible walking stick. CCTV footage revealed he’d hidden a shotgun in a carrier bag, disguising it as this walking stick during the raids. Altogether, Mullan made off with £2,780 cash stolen from terrified bookmakers and their staff.
Flying Squad Detective Speaks Out
“Mullan terrified members of the public and staff at the bookmakers who were going about their normal lives when he demanded cash and made threats of serious violence. Those people were terrified for their lives,” said Detective Constable Carl Stallabras.
“However, a simple error on his way to the second offence was all we needed to track him down, and the wealth of evidence we obtained from there left him with no choice but to plead guilty.”
