Reckless Driver Runs Rampant in Hoxton Square
Talha Hayat, 26, from Shenley Brook End, Milton Keynes, faced East London Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 19 April. He was charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and possession of cannabis — all on the same day.
Hayat pleaded guilty to every charge and was remanded in custody. He’s due for sentencing at Wood 1 Crown Court on Tuesday, 17 May.
Chaos in Hoxton Square: Driver Turns Car Into a Weapon
At 2:35 AM on Monday, 18 April, officers on patrol in Hoxton Square, N1, were alerted to a man who’d been drinking getting behind the wheel. The car, driven by Hayat, was stopped in jammed traffic.
When officers approached and asked him to switch off the engine and exit the vehicle, Hayat hit the gas instead. He first lunged dangerously towards the officers, then reversed into a queueing car, before smashing forward trying to squeeze through an impossibly small gap.
The rampage damaged three cars and narrowly avoided serious injury to police officers and pedestrians.
Police Praise Bravery Amid Dangerous Incident
Eventually, officers brought Hayat’s car to a halt and arrested him. He was formally charged the next day.
“Hayat’s actions were shocking. There is no place on our roads for people who use their cars as weapons,” said Superintendent Ed Wells of the Central East Command Unit. “Our officers showed incredible bravery, continuing to pursue him on foot despite the danger. Their swift action protected the public from Hayat’s reckless behaviour.”
“Police face unpredictable risks every day. This incident highlights just how dangerous their job can be. I am incredibly proud of their response.”
