£8,000 Wedding Cash Stolen in Brazen Southampton Burglary
Shock in Southampton as thieves snatch around £8,000 destined for a local Sikh wedding. The robbery happened at a Clovelly Road address on Friday, September 15.
Inside Job: Trusted Locals Betray the Community
The money was being counted by women organising a community collection for a wedding. But the peace was shattered when a gun-wielding man forced his way in and demanded the cash.
A getaway car, a red Hyundai, was linked straight back to the address – registered to one of the people helping with the collection.
Mum and Son Duo Busted and Sentenced
- Kalwant Kaur, 41, and her son Jung Singh Lankanpal, 22, both from Union Road, Southampton, were arrested the same day.
- They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary in October.
- Kaur was jailed for 15 months, while her son received a 30-month sentence.
Police Speak Out on the “Cold and Callous” Crime
DC Jess Swift of the Western Area Crime Team said: “Kaur and Lankanpal made a cold and callous decision to steal such a large sum of money from people they knew, money which was meant to help people in their community.
“Despite Kaur trying to present herself as a witness to a crime, it was quickly established she used her knowledge to help orchestrate this burglary.
“Through some very comprehensive enquiries, we have ensured both pleaded guilty and will serve a jail sentence. I hope this provides the local community some reassurance and justice.”
