Rising Sun Park Horror: Man Jailed for Brutal Sex Attack on Woman in Her 60s

Attack in Broad Daylight Shocks Park Visitors

Just after 4pm on March 28, Alan Anthony Rothwell, 34, launched a terrifying attack on a woman in her 60s at Rising Sun Country Park. The predator sexually assaulted and tried to rape her before fleeing, stealing her phone and a five-pound note from its cover.

The victim, badly shaken and nursing a facial injury, managed to escape and flagged down a passer-by for help.

Police Race to Catch Ruthless Attacker

Northumbria Police called on the public to help identify the suspect, receiving over 100 tips in just 24 hours. Officers launched a massive search across the park’s 400 acres and scoured CCTV footage for clues.

The breakthrough came when DNA found on latex gloves, recovered only 150 metres from the scene, linked Rothwell directly to the crime.

Within three days, detectives arrested Rothwell, who later confessed to kidnapping, attempted rape, two sexual assaults, and robbery at Newcastle Crown Court.

Justice Served: Rothwell Sentenced to Nearly 15 Years

Rothwell received 14 years and nine months behind bars, with at least eight years and nine months to serve. The judge ruled he will be recalled to prison if he offends again within six years of release.

Victim Speaks Out

“To be attacked, robbed, and sexually assaulted by someone who came to harm me was terrifying and humiliating,” the victim said. “I can’t call this person a man because he acted like an animal.”

“I was extremely unlucky that day. Though I’ve physically recovered, I still feel vulnerable and nervous when alone. My family also shared the shock and horror of this attack.”

“Thanks to my loved ones for their support and to Northumbria Police for their dedication in catching this man so swiftly.”
