Teen Jailed for Killing 86-Year-Old in Brutal Assault

Just after 3pm on September 10, 2021, police raced to The Paddock in Fulwood after reports of a violent attack. Officers found 86-year-old Frank Fishwick with serious facial injuries. He was taken to hospital but tragically died the next morning.

Fatal Punch Over Words

A post-mortem revealed Frank’s death was caused by bleeding from a broken nose — injuries consistent with an assault. Earlier, Frank had gone outside to ask a group of youths loitering near his home to move on. During the exchange, he admitted to using some racist language and later apologised.

Despite no physical threat from Frank, one youth punched him in the face before the group fled. The victim’s injuries proved fatal.

Mohammed Al Aaraj Sentenced to Four Years

The culprit, 19-year-old Mohammed Al Aaraj from Sheffield Drive, Preston, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. In December 2021, he pleaded guilty. Today, at Preston Crown Court, he was sentenced to four years behind bars.

“Mohammed Al Aaraj’s needless and rash actions claimed the life of an elderly man who had simply asked a group of youths to move on,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Haworth-Oates.

“Mr Fishwick accepted the language he used was unacceptable and apologised. But punching an 86-year-old man who posed no physical threat changed the lives of everyone involved. This is a stark reminder that actions have consequences.”

Family Speak Out on Tragic Loss

“The assault of an elderly, frail person is unconscionable. A life taken cannot be restored nor forgiveness easily given,” said Mr Fishwick’s family.

“The untimely death of a father, grandfather, and loved one has left us with profound sadness. We thank the police for their hard work and support during this unbearable time. Their commitment and care have been a true comfort.”
