University Boss Busted for Stealing £2.4 Million

David Hall, 64, from Shepherds Way in Ringmer, has been caught embezzling a staggering £2.4million from the University of Brighton. As Head of Income and Payments, he abused his powerful position to siphon off cash and disguised the theft with fake entries in the university’s accounts.

Shock Discovery in 2021 Spurs Police Probe

The fraud was uncovered in November 2021, after the university spotted discrepancies and immediately called in Sussex Police. An independent financial investigation, coupled with a police probe, revealed the complex web of deceit Hall had constructed to hide his crimes. Only detailed forensic work brought his actions to light.

Hall Pleads Guilty, Sentencing Looms

Hall quickly admitted to the offences, including fraud by abuse of position, theft by an employee, and false accounting. He pleaded guilty to all charges at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 16 February. His sentencing is set for 16 March, with the exact court to be confirmed.

Investigator Hails University’s Quick Action

“Year after year, the hole in the university’s finances became larger and more difficult for Hall to conceal,” investigator Rose Horan said. “After an audit uncovered the scale of Hall’s embezzlement, the University of Brighton was quick to report the fraud to Sussex Police. Their support throughout the investigation has been invaluable in bringing David Hall to justice.”

“I would like to thank them for their cooperation and will now look ahead to the sentencing next month.”
