Knife-Wielding Shoplifter Jailed for Seven Years After Birmingham Terror Spree

Knife-Wielding Shoplifter Jailed After Terror Spree Across Birmingham

Kurtis Gordon terrorised shops in Aston, Kingstanding, and Sutton Coldfield between June and September last year. The 27-year-old targeted multiple stores, threatening staff with a knife when caught stealing.

Staff Threatened and Injured During Raids

In June 2022, Gordon was stopped by staff at Tesco on Aston Lane trying to steal alcohol. He threatened to stab them before escaping with the loot. A month later, he returned to the same Tesco, where an employee recognised him and asked him to leave.

Instead of backing down, Gordon pulled a knife and made stabbing motions, leaving a staff member with a finger injury.

Spree Spanned Multiple Shops and Months

  • He hit Mountain Warehouse in Sutton Coldfield and Co-Op on Hawthorn Road, Kingstanding.
  • Repeatedly threatened to stab anyone who challenged him during incidents in June, July, and September.

Police pieced together CCTV footage and victim statements from across all locations, linking Gordon to several offences.

Justice Served—Heavy Jail Term and Restraining Order

Gordon, from Rawden Grove, Kingstanding, was arrested on 9 September on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, four robberies, and three shoplifting charges. He was remanded in custody.

On 10 March at Birmingham Crown Court, despite pleading not guilty, he was handed a hefty sentence of seven years and six months. A six-year restraining order bans him from entering all affected shops.

DC Ed Winter of the High Harm Robbery Team said: “Gordon is a dangerous man who is now thankfully behind bars. He affected the lives of many retail workers and security guards across Birmingham. All victims showed great courage dealing with him and attending court to ensure this outcome was possible. We built a strong case and have taken a violent and unscrupulous criminal off our streets.”
