NHS Bomb Threater Busted After £10 Million Bitcoin Ransom Demand

Emil Apreda, 33, has been nailed as the villain behind chilling bomb threats sent to the NHS by email last year. The National Crime Agency (NCA) tracked him down after a high-stakes cyber hunt. Living in Berlin at the time, Apreda fired off the first threatening message on 12 April 2020 demanding a massive £10 million in bitcoin.

Using the dark web’s TOR network, Apreda tried to mask his identity and claimed he was tied to far-right group Combat18. The NCA sprang into action, launching a top-priority investigation amid the height of the Covid-19 crisis to prevent a potential bomb attack on UK hospitals.

Threats at NHS’ Most Vulnerable Moment

Nigel Leary, Deputy Director at the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said: “We took the threat extremely seriously. For it to be carried out would have been absolutely catastrophic. The NHS were treating thousands of Covid patients, many needing oxygen. Any attack or loss of public confidence was unacceptable.”

The offender made the probe tricky by using sophisticated anonymisation tech. But a blend of cyber forensics, linguistic analysis, and close cooperation with German police pinpointed Apreda’s Berlin flat as the source.

Endgame: Arrest in Berlin

  • Apreda kept sending threatening emails — 18 in total — targeting NHS, MPs, and even Black Lives Matter protesters.
  • On 15 June, Berlin’s specialist firearms officers burst into his flat with explosives and arrested him.
  • He was charged with attempted extortion and jailed during his trial at Berlin’s District Criminal Court.

Convicted on 26 February 2021, Apreda was sentenced to three years in prison but will remain on bail until the judge officially approves the decision.

NHS and NCA Praise International Teamwork

Leary added: “Apreda cynically tried to bring down the NHS at its most vulnerable. It’s right he’s facing jail. Protecting the NHS was our top priority. Cybercrime ignores borders — so working with German partners was critical.”

An NHS spokesperson said: “This threat added severe pressure during the pandemic. Senior leaders and emergency staff had to focus on response efforts. The timing meant hospitals were most at risk. This could have led to a tragic loss of life.”
