Brighton Drug Dealer Locked Up for Over Three Years
A 19-year-old Brighton drug dealer, Shy Ponsonby-Way, has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison after admitting to multiple drug and weapons offences.
Spotted Dealing Class A Drugs on the Streets
Brighton police caught Ponsonby-Way dealing crack cocaine and heroin in the city centre earlier this year. Officers from the Specialist Enforcement Unit (SEU) spotted him making drug deals in alleyways and behind busy streets.
During one arrest, officers found 90 wraps of drugs hidden in his groin. A subsequent stop uncovered a burner phone, cash, and more drugs. He was also found with a lock knife in March.
Violent Attacks on Police and Weapons Possession
At Lewes Crown Court, Ponsonby-Way admitted to assaulting emergency workers on multiple occasions, including attacks while in custody and on the streets of Brighton.
He pleaded guilty to:
- Four counts of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply
- Two counts of possessing a knife or bladed article
- Two counts of assaulting emergency workers
- One count of possessing criminal property
Proactive Police Patrols Crack Down on County Lines Supply
The SEU’s patrols aim to disrupt the supply of drugs across Brighton. Officers observed Ponsonby-Way exchanging drugs in St James’s Street and other city hotspots. This investigation resulted in his arrest and successful prosecution.
Ponsonby-Way, formerly of Surrenden Crescent, will now serve a lengthy sentence for his role in feeding Brighton’s drug trade and his violent behaviour towards police.
