Callum Wheeler Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murder of PCSO Julia James
Callum Wheeler, 22, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 37 years for the savage murder of off-duty PCSO Julia James. The mother-of-two, 53, was ambushed and bludgeoned to death while walking her dog near her home in Snowdown, Kent, on April 27, 2021.
Horrific Attack in Ackholt Wood
- Wheeler waited in Ackholt Wood armed with a large metal railway jack, a 97cm-long cylindrical bar used to lift train tracks.
- The jury found him guilty within an hour, rejecting his claim that he was not guilty of murder despite admitting responsibility.
- Ms James’s body was found face down near a field with catastrophic head injuries and a broken wrist, believed to be from her desperate attempt to escape.
Who Is Callum Wheeler?
Born February 2, 2000, Wheeler lived with his father in Aylesham, Kent, just eight miles from where the attack happened. He was unemployed and had no previous convictions. Prosecutor Alison Morgan QC described him as an “angry, violent, strange, highly sexualised man.”
Wheeler had been seen frequently near the crime scene and was noted to carry a blue holdall with the murder weapon poking out in the days leading up to the attack. CCTV captured him on the day of the murder carrying the bag near Ratling Road.
Chilling Signs Before the Murder
- Julia James had spotted Wheeler in the woods several times before and referred to him as a “really weird dude” to her husband.
- Gamekeeper Gavin Tucker caught Wheeler trespassing in September 2020, even confronting him.
- Wheeler made an abandoned 999 call from his home 10 days before the murder and mocked PCSOs when they responded.
In the days before the attack, Wheeler searched for the term “rape” online and accessed pornography websites, adding a disturbing edge to the case.
Wheeler’s Shocking Behaviour After the Murder
After his arrest on May 7, 2021, Wheeler barricaded himself in his bedroom and shouted, “Who told you?” When police broke in, he threatened them with, “Yous are f****** dead.”
While in custody, he exposed himself to female officers and said Ms James “deserved to die” because she was a police officer. He also claimed if released, he would return to the woods to kill again.
Justice for Julia James
The metal railway jack used in the attack was recovered from Wheeler’s bedroom, with forensic experts confirming Julia James’s DNA on the weapon. Wheeler’s DNA was also found on her clothing.
Julia James’s tragic murder shocked Kent and the nation. Today, the court has ensured she will not be forgotten, and her killer will be locked away for decades to come.
