Horrific holiday heartbreak! A Chingford couple’s dream summer trip turned deadly when a speeding drunk driver smashed into them at a pedestrian crossing in sunny Spain. Steven Campbell, 51, died instantly; wife Emma was seriously hurt in the crash in Los Alcázares, Murcia.
Holiday To Horror: Couple Mowed Down on Spain Break
Steven and Emma Campbell touched down in Murcia on July 6, 2024, eager for a restful getaway. Married since 1997, the couple enjoyed peaceful days soaking up Spain before watching the Euro 2024 semi-final between Spain and France on their last evening. After the match, they decided on a calm walk along the seafront – a decision that would change their lives forever.
At around 11pm outside the Costa Narejos Hotel, disaster struck. A speeding Peugeot 406, driven by a man named Mr. Abdelali, barreled through a pedestrian crossing, hitting both Steven and Emma. Spanish police arrived swiftly at 11:05pm; the engine was still running and the driver reeked of alcohol.
Drunk Driver’s Deadly Speed
The inquest at East London Coroner’s Court on February 21 revealed devastating details. Steven suffered catastrophic head trauma leading to brain death. Emma survived but was left with serious injuries.
Police found the driver over three times the legal drink-drive limit. He claimed a parked car blocked his view, but investigators said he was driving recklessly and far too fast. The impact threw the couple metres from the crossing, confirming the speed.
Steven passed away the next day in hospital, while Emma endured two weeks in a Spanish hospital before being transferred back to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
A Family Shattered
Steven, an investments specialist at Wells Fargo, had hoped to retire in three years to spend more time with Emma and their children. Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe called him “an honest, caring, and funny family man” who was working hard for a comfy future.
“He was working hard to be able to retire in three years and spend quality time with his wife and children,” Dr Radcliffe said.
She ruled the cause of death as a road traffic collision but stressed the UK court can’t rule on civil liability in overseas cases. She offered “deepest sympathies” to the bereaved family, calling the death “a tragedy.”
Justice Still Waiting in Spain
The driver faces charges of drink-driving and causing death by dangerous driving in Spain. However, he has yet to stand trial, leaving the family frustrated but focused on remembering Steven’s life.
“On July 9, 2024, our lives changed forever,” the family said. “While nothing can bring Steve back, we want to remember him as a brilliant husband, supportive father, and great friend. We ask for privacy as we grieve.”
A Harrowing Warning
This tragic case shines a brutal light on the deadly consequences of drink-driving. The pain crosses borders, but the grief is universal. As Emma fights to recover, the family waits anxiously for justice to be served.
