Burglar Battered by Brave 74-Year-Old Pensioner During Daring Break-In
A bungling burglar got more than he bargained for when he targeted the wrong pensioner in a terrifying nighttime raid. Shamus Doyle, 32, broke into a 74-year-old man’s semi-detached home in the early hours of February 19, 2024—only to be met with fierce resistance.
Pensioner Smashes Bottle Over Burglar’s Head
The terrified but courageous homeowner was woken by the intruder and didn’t hesitate. Showing “incredible bravery,” the pensioner grabbed a glass bottle and smashed it over Doyle’s head. Stunned and bleeding, Doyle fled the house—only to return armed with a brick shortly after.
He threatened to attack the pensioner again in the garden, but when told police were on their way, the thug threw the brick through a living room window and made off once more.
Caught Red-Handed with Bloodied Head
Police soon found Doyle nearby, his head bloodied from the bottle smash. He claimed he had been in a park fight, but CCTV footage and DNA evidence told a different story. Blood matching Doyle’s was discovered at the victim’s home, sealing his fate at nottingham/" title="Nottingham" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Nottingham Crown Court.
With no fixed address, Doyle pleaded guilty to burglary, criminal damage, and using threatening behaviour. He was sentenced to two years and 174 days behind bars.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
Detective Constable Phil James slammed Doyle’s actions: “This was a truly appalling crime. Burglary is always intrusive, but to terrorise a man in his 70s like this is shocking. The victim showed incredible bravery and resilience.”
Under Crown Prosecution Service rules, homeowners can use “reasonable force” to defend themselves—including using nearby objects as weapons in the heat of the moment.
Though shaken, the pensioner’s courage helped bring Doyle to justice. Police hope the jail term offers some peace as he recovers from the ordeal.
