Brutal Murderer Sentenced After Dismembering Vulnerable Man

A 27-year-old labourer, Dajour Jones, has been handed life imprisonment for the savage murder and dismemberment of a vulnerable young man. He must serve a minimum of 27 years, including time already spent behind bars.

Horrific Attack in Norwood Hostel

The victim, 20-year-old Jamie Gilbey, was last seen entering Jones’s room at a hostel in Upper Norwood on the night of January 27, 2022. At the Old Bailey, jurors heard how Jones launched a vicious and sustained assault, inflicting severe head wounds and stabbing Jamie both before and after death.

Jones then coldly dismembered Jamie’s body, placing the remains in bin bags and disposing of them across South Norwood Lake and Grounds. Using a purple suitcase, Jones made two trips to dump body parts, followed by a third to discard blood-stained clothes and bedding.

“Violent and Dangerous” Killer Skips Sentencing

Sentencing Jones in his absence—after he refused to show up—Judge Nigel Lickley KC branded him a “violent and dangerous individual” who cruelly robbed Jamie of his future.

“Jamie was in the prime of his life and had his entire life ahead of him. You took that away,” the judge said.

Family Left Shattered

Jamie’s mother, Charlene Baxter, spoke emotionally about the devastating loss:

“My sons often ask if the bad man is coming. Jamie was always happy, laughing, and joking. He loved playing pranks on people. Our family is broken.”

Cold-Hearted Criminal Shows No Remorse

Prosecutor Simon Denison KC labelled the case “deeply disturbing,” highlighting Jamie’s vulnerability due to learning difficulties and trusting nature. Jones claimed self-defence, insisting he hit Jamie with a broom after being attacked with a knife. The jury saw through this lie, convicting him of murder after a grueling nine-week trial.

Chillingly, Jones kept Jamie’s remains in a crate in his room before dumping them and cleaning up the bloodied crime scene. Witnesses described him as “extraordinarily relaxed and cheerful” days after the killing.

Criminal History and Final Verdict

  • Jones has a violent past, including attacking a cycling shop worker with a glass.
  • He was recently released on licence from prison when he committed the murder.
  • Police arrested him on March 3, 2022. His calm response to charges: “Alright. Cool.”

Judge Lickley sentenced Jones to life, setting a minimum term of 24 years and 353 days, taking into account 2 years and 12 days already served.

The community remains shocked and heartbroken over the loss of a kind, trusting young man taken in the most brutal way.
