Speed Demon Jailed After Killing Teen in Shocking 117mph Crash

Tragic Crash on Canterbury’s New Dover Road

A man has been locked up for six years after a deadly crash that killed 18-year-old Lucy Billingham. Jack Cracknell, 22, from Ospringe, Faversham, was caught tearing down New Dover Road in Canterbury at nearly three times the speed limit – 117mph in a 40mph zone.

The horrific smash happened in the early hours of 3 December 2022, after a night out at a nightclub. Cracknell was driving a Ford Fiesta with four passengers when he lost control, slamming into a curb, street furniture, a roundabout, and even the Old Gate Inn pub and hotel.

Teen Passenger Dies at Scene

Lucy, seated in the rear left, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger was left with serious injuries, including a broken wrist and bruises.

Investigators revealed Cracknell ignored pleas to stop at the hotel where Lucy and her friend were meant to get out. Instead, he floored it on New Dover Road, causing the catastrophic crash.

Guilty Plea and Harsh Sentence

Cracknell was arrested the night of the crash and later admitted to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. He pleaded guilty in November 2024 at Canterbury Crown Court.

Detective Constable Lee Berridge said: “Lucy Billingham’s death was completely avoidable, had Cracknell driven sensibly and within the speed limit. This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences of reckless and high-speed driving.”

He added: “My thoughts, and those of my team, are with Lucy’s family and friends, who continue to mourn their loss and remember her.”

Speeding Risks and Lasting Impact

A thorough investigation included sending car parts to the manufacturer in France for analysis. Cracknell’s brutal sentencing highlights the deadly results of dangerous driving. His reckless choices have shattered lives and left a painful mark on all who knew Lucy.
