Speeding Driver Jailed After Cyclist’s Tragic Death in Newham
Syed Minhaz Ahmed, 32, from Third Avenue, Newham, has been locked up for four years after causing death by dangerous driving. Ahmed must serve two years in prison, with the rest on licence. He was also disqualified from driving for six years and must pass an extended retest before getting back behind the wheel. The sentencing happened at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 4 August.
Death on Romford Road: Cyclist Killed by Reckless Driver
The heartbreaking incident took place on 24 July 2020. Ahmed was caught driving at over twice the speed limit – more than 65mph in a 30mph zone – on Romford Road, Newham. His car hit 31-year-old cyclist Jay Kristiansen, throwing him from his bike. Despite emergency efforts, Jay died the next day at the Royal London Hospital.
Driver Fled Scene, Surrendered 33 Hours Later
Instead of staying at the crash site, Ahmed bolted and abandoned his car. He only turned himself in to police 33 hours later.
“This young man’s reckless driving has devastated a family and taken a life,” said Acting Detective Sergeant Liz Carrey. “CCTV clearly showed he was speeding dangerously and then callously left the victim with catastrophic injuries.”
Family Speak Out After Justice Served
The trial lasted five days in March 2023 at Snaresbrook Crown Court, ending with a unanimous guilty verdict. Jay’s family shared a moving response:
“Jay was funny, caring, and loved animals. He had hopes and dreams, including starting a family, which we will never see come true. We’re grateful justice has been served, but life will never be the same without him.”
