Road Rage Rage: Man Jailed for Fatal Fight in Oldbury
A shocking road rage brawl in Oldbury has ended in tragedy just two weeks before Christmas. Arslan Farooq, 25, has been slammed with an eight-year and three-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter and dangerous driving.
Deadly Punch on Wolverhampton Road
Farooq’s victim, 51-year-old Simon West, died four days after being punched during a furious showdown on the A4123 Wolverhampton Road on December 10 last year. Witnesses said Farooq forced West to pull over, then landed a single savage punch that sent him crashing to the ground. Farooq then sped off in his Vauxhall Astra, leaving West with grave head injuries.
CCTV Shows Aggressive Tailgating and Crash
Investigators uncovered CCTV footage revealing the violent build-up. Farooq was seen tailing West’s black Peugeot van at traffic lights near Pool Road and Causeway Green Road. He then swerved aggressively in front of West on Wolverhampton Road, forcing him to stop — moments before the fatal blow.
Justice Served—But Family Left Heartbroken
West was rushed to hospital but succumbed to a traumatic head injury on December 14. His family paid tribute, calling him a loving father, brother, son, partner, and new grandfather.
Farooq was re-arrested the day after West’s death and admitted guilt at Birmingham Crown Court in May. Alongside jail, he faces a 12-month driving ban post-release.
Detective Inspector Ranj Sangha of West Midlands Police said: “There’s no place for this kind of behaviour on our roads. This tragedy has deeply affected a family and community. The investigation ensured justice has been done and we hope the sentencing brings some peace to Mr West’s loved ones.”
