Notorious Drug Kingpin Craig McKenzie Jailed for 20 Years
Craig McKenzie, a notorious drug lord, has been slammed with a 20-year prison sentence after a major National Crime Agency (NCA) probe. The 41-year-old crime boss was convicted of running an international drug ring, smuggling heroin, cocaine, and cannabis from hotspots including the Netherlands, Spain, and North America.
From Manchester to London: McKenzie’s Drug Empire
McKenzie operated out of Hatchmere Close in Greater Manchester, using runners to distribute drugs across Liverpool, Manchester, Wales, and London. His empire also laundered cash, funneling millions to criminal contacts in Spain and the UAE.
The bust uncovered a lavish lifestyle masking his filthy earnings. Though claiming a modest £33,000 income in 2021, McKenzie flaunted a £250,000 Richard Mille rose gold watch, drove a brand-new BMW X5 and VW Tiguan, and stashed £128,000 worth of designer gear plus £33,000 in cash during an NCA raid.
EncroChat Crackdown Leads to Fall of ‘Teflon Holdings’ Boss
McKenzie’s downfall came through Operation Venetic, sparked by the takedown of the encrypted chat platform EncroChat in 2020. The NCA sifted through over 11,000 messages from his EncroChat alias ‘Manlydesert,’ exposing a web of international drug conspiracies.
- Convicted for conspiring to supply 45kg of cocaine and 14kg of heroin (£5m street value) plus 90kg of cannabis (£900,000).
- Involved in laundering £400,000 within three months.
- Assets worth £1.5 million have been frozen under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Criminal Past and NCA’s Bold Strike
Craig McKenzie’s rap sheet dates back to a robbery conviction at 13 and includes 18 convictions across 26 offences. He faced murder charges in 2009 but was acquitted after claiming innocence and posing as a car dealer. Two others were convicted of the murder.
“McKenzie’s arrogance made him believe he was untouchable,” said Dean Wallbank, senior NCA investigator. “Operation Venetic is a game-changer in bringing down criminals hiding in the shadows. We remain relentless in fighting Class A drug supply and protecting communities.”
