Drunk Driver Jailed for Killing Cyclist in Huyton Hit-and-Run
A reckless motorist has been slammed with a hefty 11 years and eight months behind bars after a fatal crash on Tarbock Road, Huyton. James O’Donnell, 35, sped through a 30mph zone at 68mph and smashed into 63-year-old cyclist Keith Hornby, who died instantly.
Hit-and-Run Nightmare
The horror unfolded on 5 March 2025. Instead of stopping, O’Donnell dumped his black Volkswagen ID5 in a nearby estate, then shockingly went to buy booze before casually walking home. Police soon arrested him, finding his blood alcohol nearly three times over the limit.
O’Donnell initially denied the charges but caved and pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court on 20 March to causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop, and drink driving.
Police Blast “Callous” Driver
“James O’Donnell’s choice to drive drunk at grossly excessive speeds shows complete disregard for everyone else on the road,” said Detective Sergeant Andy Roper.
“Keith Hornby was out enjoying a sunny day on his regular cycling route. He never expected a drunk driver to barrel towards him. After hitting him, O’Donnell callously looked at the victim, then sped off.”
“Mr Hornby cared for his elderly mother and was simply getting some fresh air. His death is heartbreaking and completely avoidable. Our thoughts go to his family and friends.”
Community Mourns as Police Press On
Merseyside Police praised the public who stopped to help Mr Hornby and backed the investigation. The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is working hard to prevent more tragedies on the roads.
